"There's always a chance, Doctor, as long as one can think." - Basil of Baker Street
NAME: Basil Barnaby Brightwell NICKNAMES: Basil, Professor Brightwell. No misters. Mm-mm. AGE: Twenty-seven BIRTHDAY: March 4th ORIENTATION: Pansexual, though he claims Asexual. NATIONALITY: English. OCCUPATION: Police Detective, part time Criminology Professor. PLAYED BY: David Tennant DISNEY: The Great Mouse Detective USER GROUP: Hero
PERSONALITY !
Awkward :: Basil's a complicated man. It's actually very hard for him to be affectionate and polite. He's just such a rushed person, his mind constantly racing, that he's no time for niceties. He dislikes children and women alike, finding them quite untidy, needy, and just.. clingy. He's a man that enjoys his own company, and romance overall just seems to bother him. Compassionate :: Let it not be said, that this man is uncompassionate. Emotionally stunted of course, but sympathetic. Basil's also got quite the sense of humour, often making witty remarks during class and causing an uproar. His favourite method of teaching usually involves shouting unexpectedly to get students' undivided attention. Temper :: Basil's prone to having fits, sometimes even sulking tantrums when something goes wrong. As such, he took up the hobby of playing his violin. Indeed, because of his temper he chooses to practice his instrument (not entirely well) each time he's stressed. Unfortunately, his lack of musical prowess usually serve only serve to frustrate him more, in which case he turns to tobacco and on occasion alcohol.
QUIRKS: - When stressed, running his hands through his hair
- Ignoring stupid questions
- Talking to himself
LIKES: - Celestial Bodies :: Basil has always had a thing for stargazing. Though it's not his passion nor area of expertise, he quite enjoys spending restless nights with his telescope.
- Reading :: A given hobby of his, considering his IQ level. His favourite genre would be crime and mystery, unsurprisingly, though he's open to all kinds.
- Classical Music :: In times of stress, Basil finds that relaxing to Mozart or Beethoven helps to clear his cluttered mind. He also enjoys falling asleep to it.
- Teaching :: Most wouldn't assume the man actually enjoys this, but he honestly finds solace in passing on his knowledge to others.
- Science :: Though this is isn't his area of expertise, Basil has a knack for the scientific world. His chosen profession in criminology does however require some knowledge regarding scenes of a crime, blood residue, etc etc.
- Intellectually stimulating conversation :: The man has no patience for petty small talk and physical relations. You want to get on his good side, tickle his brain and he'll open up.
- Dogs :: Basil's a dog person, fyi, and enjoys their company more so than most people's. They're trustworthy, loving, and most of all loyal. He adores them.
- Work :: This includes but isn't limited to teacher-related matters. When he can find something to keep his mind working, Basil likes it. It helps him stay on his toes, but also serves as a huge distraction to his own short comings.
- Tobacco :: Though he wouldn't say he "likes" it, he is addicted to nicotine. And Basil can't deny it calms his nerves when he smokes.
- Hot tea :: Quite similar to his smoking habit, Basil can't function after he wakes up without a cuppa.
DISLIKES: - Children :: They're clingy, emotional, unstable, and not necessary.
- Women :: See "children".
- Illiterates :: If you can't read, Basil has no interest what so ever.
- A lack of personal space :: This is a big no-no. Basil enjoys his bubble, and when he doesn't give obvious social cues that physical touch is welcome, he's usually likely to cringe uncomfortably.
- Cats :: They're bipolar! Not to mention the hair they shed everywhere is just awful.
- Blood :: Though he's got the stomach to handle a lot of things, the man doesn't enjoy seeing gruesome things. As such, he's learned to desensitize himself from things, but on occasion he still feels uncomfortable around displays of physical violence.
- Brute strength :: Rarely does anything irritate Basil more than displays of physical prowess. They're nothing if one doesn't have a good mind to go along with it, and more often than not this isn't the case.
- Flirting :: This may be because of the man's less than adequate social abilities, but when Basil's hit on he feels infinitely uncomfortable. He's more than able to dismiss the attempts with a witty reply, but the awkward tension never really disperses.
- Loud music :: It's easy to compare the teacher to an elderly man, but he's quite prone to agitation when loud, "hip-hop" or some other nonsense is being blasted through the walls.
- Sex :: No, he's not a virgin. But Basil just isn't a sexual being. He's married to his work first and foremost, and any time he could be spending with a significant other is wasted time.
- Video games :: Honestly, what is the point?
HISTORY !
Basil's life hadn't always been so complex. True, he's always been a curious fellow, searching for other's lost items, tracking down culprits of minor incidents. Criminal Justice has always fascinated the man, though this ideal wasn't realized until the day his father disappeared.
There was no explanation for his sudden departure, other than of course the obvious signs of struggle. The rumour was that he was involved in some unseemly business deals in order to keep his own shoe store open. He was a loving father, and a devoted husband to the fullest, but was never found again.
Due to immense heartbreak, the boy's mother clung to her son through the rest of his childhood. She saw the intelligence in him, and eventually became obsessed with reminding Basil his mind was his most precious asset. It was a common act for her to place both hands on his cheeks, fingers at his temples and around his eyes, assuring him he was the smartest boy in the world, something akin to a crazed look in her eyes.
He never was the strongest boy growing up, and more than once encountered accidents that left him bedridden for months, forced with boredom as his company if not stimulating his brain. he often felt suspicion at these occurrences, as the stepping stool he broke his ankle on was functioning quite well before he witnessed his mother tinkering with it, among other things.
At 16 Basil acquired a small job at the local theater, cleaning up after performances and saving up every penny so as to afford a caretaker for his mother. Within a few years, he had enough to hire someone and left, feeling he could no longer remain in a home with so sick a woman. It broke his heart, make no mistake, but it was impossible for him to take it any longer.
Life went on and Basil enrolled in the police academy. He spent several years as a bobby in England, and eventually made detective. Later, he moved to America and acquired his teaching license after a case that nearly cost him his life.
He went from school to school, never quite fitting in, despite the many range of elective subjects he taught. It wasn't long before he became something of a nomad, wandering from city to city, not just in America. On his travels, he encountered Fantasia City and, though it's quite large and not at all in his comfort zone, the man works surprisingly well here as mainly a detective for the police force, though spends several days a week at Thomas College, teaching Criminology.
SAMPLE !
((this is taken from the starter post of another site, where i used basil again. he actually was a detective there, so it's a little off, but i hope it's okay. <3)
It hadn't been a particularly troubling case. Very shut end, if Basil did say so himself. The tragic murder of a young woman with very good manners, a wealthy estate, and virtually no obvious enemies was bound, of course, to have enemies.
It was rather cut and dry. A .38 bullet had punctured her left lung, causing a death the detective wasn't all that keen on relaying. It was slow, and evidently quite painful, but he'd long since let himself feel a real emotional tug for victims. Those that were dead were dead, and it was the alive ones he had to watch his manners with.
As it was, whilst carefully observing the exact details surrounding the woman's prone body, Basil came across the unmistakable petal of a Bush Lupine. With furrowed brows, he'd taken this as a strange sign. Though it was a common plant, it grew mostly in forests, woods at the very least, and Miss Woodbed (or whatever) lived quite within the city. He'd then volunteered to personally search nearby, inspecting every thicket of trees where the evidence might have grown.
After seeking high and low throughout each nearby wild habitat, eventually Basil had caught sight of the plant very near a house just on the outskirts of the city limits. A lone man resided, quite bitter and even going so far as to threaten Basil mind you, but had a nice bush of Brush Lupine growing very near his front door.
After that it was like taking candy from a baby, which would actually be quite rude. Mr. Durbanheim (or whatever) was a relative of the late woman, and because she was the heir of her family's fortune, he sought fit to get her out of the picture. Doing so would cause him to be next in line, thus becoming rich outrageously quickly.
Again, it was a closed case rather quickly. However, the current mystery of Basil's irritated skin and suddenly poor eyesight was another thing entirely. The man wasn't given much time to ponder much however, as he was quickly alerted to another case he was to assist in.
So the detective strode what he believed to be confidently down the academy's halls, accidentally tripping over many things and even bumping into the students.
"So sorry," he commented absentmindedly, hands held out before him in a sign to keep one's distance. "Excuse me," he muttered as another body collided with his own.
