"I see your face and wonder, were you once an outcast, too? " - Esmeralda
NAME: Esmeralda Aishe Heron NICKNAMES: Esme AGE: 21 BIRTHDAY: July 5th ORIENTATION: Bisexual NATIONALITY: French Romani OCCUPATION: Part-time waitress and dancer PLAYED BY: Jessica Szohr DISNEY: The Hunchback of Notre Dame USER GROUP: Heroine
PERSONALITY !
CONFIDENT! There are some women who spend hours every day on hair, makeup, skin products and clothes, doing all they can to look their best before they step outside. Esmeralda is not one of them. She doesn’t feel the need to because she is already completely comfortable in her own skin. Now, she wears some makeup and does care about what she wears, but she isn’t obsessive – and even when wearing sweatpants on a bad hair day, she has this kind of aura of pride and confidence. Like everyone else, though, there are days when she doesn’t love everything about herself. She just doesn’t like letting that show, since she thinks believing in yourself is the first step towards happiness (and that pretending is a great way to actually make that belief real).
OPTIMISTIC! Perhaps it seems obvious someone with such faith in herself should be an optimist, but it is worth noting nonetheless. Her life has not always been the easiest, after all, but she has retained her positive view of the world and the people in it. When she has a bad day, she would rather think about the future than wallow in her misery because she knows everything has got to work out one way or another. She isn’t a total dreamer either, though, as she realizes that in order for things to get as good as she wants them to be, she’s going to have to work for it. Because of this, she has also developed a strong sense of independence and is reluctant to accept help, even if she does generally think people have good intentions. Doing things herself is the best way to get them done.
FRIENDLY! Yes, Esme is outgoing, and has no problem striking up a conversation with a stranger if she needs to. Usually, though, she prefers to stick to people she knows and trusts, and won’t randomly approach everyone she meets. She is very friendly, though, and is a cheerful person who laughs and smiles a lot, so she has developed a substantial network of friends over the years. She is rarely all by herself for too long and absolutely loves having a good time, preferably with loud, rhythmic music and people dancing.
CARING! She isn’t hyperactive, though, and is fully capable of sitting down and having a serious conversation. This is aided by the genuine compassion she feels for almost everyone around her. If someone needs her, you can bet anything she’s going to make time for them, even if it isn’t someone she’s extremely close to. She also has a soft spot for those who stand out or somehow don’t fit in, because she, too, knows what it is like to be an outsider. She has a high degree of empathy for the people around her and doesn’t judge based on appearance, social standing or anything like that, and has absolutely no respect for those who do. Ironically, this causes her to be a bit prejudiced against authority figures, because she feels those higher up in the ‘system’ don’t know what the real world is like.
OPINIONATED! Esmeralda is one of those people who seems to have an opinion on pretty much everything – animal testing, trafficking, political corruption, global warming, whatever. She might not have a solution to all the problems in the world, but you can bet she has a thing or two to say about them anyway. Getting her to partake in a discussion is probably one of the easiest things in the world because it’s just so easy for her to become passionate about something. This causes her to speak or act without thinking at times, which some people obviously disapprove of, but it doesn’t really bother her. After all, she’s obviously right, even if she is a bit abrasive.
QUIRKS: She uses her hands a lot when she speaks, and almost always stands with at least one hand on her hip when not speaking.
LIKES: People, animals, dancing, traveling, music, visual art, magicians, her family, bright colors, late nights out, the moon, uniqueness DISLIKES: Authority figures, conservatives, needing help, getting caught, obsessive vanity, being bored, sitting still for too long, conformity, rainy days, people who treat others like dirt
HISTORY ! Patricia was a girl of only sixteen when her daughter was born, and in addition to this, she was one of the many poor French Romani living in France at the time, so it was difficult for her to support herself and the baby. The father had been a Frenchman, several years older than young Patricia, but he absolutely refused to acknowledge that Esmeralda was his daughter. Therefore, the little girl was raised in one of the urban camps around the country; a small apartment building, absolutely crowded by the Romani. At times there were ten or more people sharing a room, so it was only natural that Esmeralda should grow to be good with people.
Already in primary school, Esmeralda got the chance to impress with her social skills. Unfortunately, her academic talents were underwhelming, and she struggled with both reading and writing far longer than her peers. This was understandably frustrating for her, and created a sort of evil circle; she felt like she couldn’t do anything, so she became less and less motivated to do any schoolwork, again resulting in her struggling even more. However, her mother discovered that the girl’s fascination with Romani culture was the key to making her learning easier, and when stories of their culture and history was integrated in what Esmeralda would otherwise consider boring school-related work, her motivation increased again and she got up to par. She was never above average in school, though – rather the opposite, in fact, though not as dramatically below average as it could have been.
Esme was in high school when she realized she didn’t want to stay in a small apartment complex in France for the rest of her life, and started doing various part-time jobs so she’d earn enough money to move away. Then, after about two years, she found a cheap loft for sale in Fantasia and decided to go for it, moving to the city within a matter of weeks. There wasn’t a whole lot of work involved in the moving, after all, since she didn’t own a whole lot of things. Once she settled into her apartment, she started looking around for work again and soon enough found an opening at a neighborhood café for a part-time waitress. After another couple of months, she auditioned for a local dance troupe and was accepted, so she spends a fair amount of her time dancing and performing as well.
SAMPLE ! Should she have said something else? Something more? Dominique wasn’t sure, but she was fairly sure that a conversation with a cousin to whom she had been quite close in her childhood should not feel as forced as this. It was like talking to a stranger. Then again, they were practically strangers despite their family ties. Maintaining close relations to the Weasley clan had been important to Bill, but Fleur hadn’t quite agreed on that as she liked less than half of them, so that had affected Dominique quite a bit. It would have been great for things to have been as effortless as when someone suggested a game of tag ten years ago, but that, of course, was not how it worked. Friendships had to be worked on, and in the case of Lily – as well as a lot of the other cousins – they simply hadn’t been. It wasn’t a huge loss, though. The few childhood friends she still talked to were always telling her how changed she was, and she didn’t appreciate it.
Why was this so awkward, though? Dominique wasn’t exactly a social butterfly and she did often have a problem talking to other girls, but she usually managed to talk at least fairly easily. She blamed the pain rather than try to think of any other possible explanations, though. Cutting up her knee on a rock wasn’t exactly comfortable, after all, and no one would be in the mood for exchanging pleasantries while bleeding like this. False pleasantries. She was acting, wasn’t she? Acting like she and Lily had anything to talk about. Acting like they were closer than anyone else she could have gone to for help. Bloody hell, she hated it when people did that. Hated it when someone pretended to like her and any idiot could tell how superficial that niceness was. Like right now. As she sat down on one of the benches and watched Lily, she opened her mouth to mention just that.
Lily spoke before she had the time to, though, and she forced a smile in response. ”I can do that myself, thanks,” she replied, taking the gauze from her cousin. Her tone had been a bit harsher than she had intended it to, but seriously, this was just too awkward for anything she could have said to not seem out of place. Lily felt it too, didn’t she? Of course she did. This kind of tension could very well almost be cut with a knife. Deciding to just stay quiet to avoid any further weirdness (as if awkward silences weren’t just as bad, but regardless), she used a very small piece of the gauze to attempt to dry of some of the blood. It didn’t work very well, but she’d get herself cleaned up when she got back to the castle. For now, it just needed to be dry enough for her to actually make the gauze tight enough.
Hearing Lily’s voice again, she looked up from her knee again, eyebrows slightly arched. All right, this was pointless. ”Look, Lily,” she said, biting her lip slightly before continuing. ”You don’t have to do that. Stop pretending. We don’t… we don’t talk.” She paused for a very brief second. No, she was definitely not one to sugarcoat things anymore. Then she added, ”You probably don’t even like me, do you?” There was definitely something accusatory in her tone now, even though she hadn’t intended it to come out like that. She knew exactly what was being said about her around the school, so Lily had probably heard it all as well – and if she hadn’t, she probably expected her to be like Victoire, which she wasn’t. Either way, the other girl had no reason whatsoever to like her, logically. That was a bit painful, of course, but it couldn’t really be helped.
