Oliver felt his stomach plummet.
"off to beat the shit outta a bunch of nameless, faceless high schoolers"
"No, no, no, no, no."
The boy grabbed his bag, shoving any books and notepads he'd taken out back into it hurriedly. Oli didn't have time to think, he just had to pack his things, grab his stuff, and make sure Dodger didn't do anything illegal. He inwardly shoved the thought away that what they were going was probably illegal too.
"No, no, no."
Slinging the backpack over his shoulders, Oliver shut off the computer (incorrectly, opting to just push the off button instead of waiting), and, after sending a quick "Goodbye, ma'am!" to the computer teacher, all but sprinted out of the room.
"No, no, no."
Dodging a teacher that called for him to slow down, the teen jogged past countless classrooms. In hindsight he would berate himself for causing so much noise, because it was pretty damn obvious each open doorway he passed, the class inside was disrupted from its lesson. Not to mention the normally quiet, shy, but always polite boy Oliver Young was the cause for said distraction wasn't about to be something that anyone was likely to ignore.
But right now, all the kid cared about was getting to the front entrance and meeting Jack before did something he'd regret. Like assault every high school boy because of a tantrum and succeed in getting arrested. Sometimes the man was the smartest guy Oliver knew, but at others, like right now, he was just irrational.
"No, no."
Shoving the front door open, Oli ran out to the end of the curb, panting, and doubled over to catch his breath. He wasn't sure how much time had passed, but it must have been awhile because he was on the entire other side of the school (just his luck), and he definitely didn't want to run at full speed in the school. That'd just cause an uproar. Although..
He looked backed, almost expecting to see a hoard of teachers stalking forward to put him in detention. Fortunately, no such thing was happening and he allowed himself a sigh of relief.
Looking forward again to the parking lot, Oliver worried his bottom lip. That's one thing not to be concerned about. Now the next was another (and bigger) thing entirely.

Jack drove as fast as he could down the street. He didn't feel like storming in without making an entrance. The man stomped on the accelerator and thankfully none of the police were out at the moment. Who would be stupid enough to proposition Oliver when they had at least some knowledge of his existence?! They were just asking for Jack to tear them apart. The skidding of the tires as Jack pulled into the school wasn't as bad as he 'd like for it to be, but it got the groundskeepers' attentions. He found a parking space and skidded to a halt perfectly into it, the man parking, turning off the car and getting out. With a slam of the door, the man stormed out of his car and towards the school. Unlucky for him, the parking space was far away from the school so he had a ways to walk.
This wasn't as dramatic and scary as he'd hoped, sadly, the man still fuming from what Oliver had told him earlier and he grumbled. His hair was all askew and so were his clothes, his tie was nowhere to be found and he looked as if he'd gotten beaten himself. Well, that happened actually. On his way here, he ran into one of those crazy parents who had a kid in Oliver's class and another one who had been in Dodger's class the year before. Then, the man starts making accusations about Dodger and his child when Dodger had told him he wasn't in the mood for his ridiculous fairytales and he ended up getting punched in the face. Dodger had retaliated, since he was already in a murderous mood, and soon the campus police pulled the parent off of him, arresting the man for assault.
His story was completely bogus and the man was entirely drunk, but bashing Jack's head into the wall a few times wasn't the best idea and now Jack started teetering off balance. He didn't care what happened to him, he needed to get to Oliver. The man was halfway through the parking lot when he spotted that familiar streak of blonde hair running from the school. What was he doing?
The man stumbled over to Oliver and glared at him, feeling himself almost fall over as he approached the boy. "Get outta the way," he slurred, stumbling past Oliver and not noticing the blood coming from the back of his head. It wasn't until he felt some liquid fall from his fingertips that he looked at his hand to see the blood. He blinked as he touched the back of his head and more blood appeared from the wound. Wow. That guy must've slammed his head harder than he thought. Jack turned to Oliver, his vision blurry, and took a breath, about to say something and the next thing he knew he was on his side on the ground, not moving.

Fortunately for Oliver, it didn't take that long for the familiar sound of tires screeching to a halt to meet his ears. Looking across the parking lot, he witnessed Dodger's old car and the man himself emerging from the driver's door. But something seemed..off. He was walking strangely, almost like his sense of balance was off.
What was he doing?
At the sight of Oliver however, Jack seemed to catch an extra burst of energy and was soon only a few feet away. The teen couldn't hold in the gasp when he saw the disheveled state the older man was in, and made to hurry forward to help him carry himself.
He was a mess. His face and hair were dripping in sweat, while the knuckles on his right hand were steadily bruising. Had the man gone and gotten into a fight to vent his frustrations or something? Oliver restrained himself from shouting in concerned anger, however, and put a hand on Dodger's shoulder gently.
"Get outta the way."
Oli's lips pursed in irritation out of pure habit (he was used to adopting that face whenever Jack got too stubborn), but gasped again in horror.
The back of the man's head was bleeding, soaked in sticky crimson liquid and sweat. It dripped down the back of Dodger's neck, staining his jacket and shirt beneath. With a cry of surprise, Oliver watched as his caretaker turned slowly around before collapsing heavily onto the hard cement.
Rushing forward quickly, the blonde lifted his head delicately, laying it on his lap. His breath quickened to near hyperventilation, his hands quickly getting coated in blood, as his body trembled in fear and worry.
"Jack, wake up!" he whispered frantically, gently patting his cheeks, "What--you might have a concussion! You can't go be unconscious with one!"
The Lord must have taken pity on the sight, because not a minute later several teachers raced from the front entrance, asking him a million questions and all he could do was gape and shake his head. No thoughts other than "Ohmygodjack'sdead" were in his brain, and he only made to move when they attempted to lift Dodger from the ground. Mrs. something-or-other held him back though, despite his cries that he needed to take care of the older man.
After yelling and all around freaking out, Oliver took a few calming breaths as instructed. Afterwards, he was allowed to follow the rest into the school again. The only thing holding him back from sprinting was the grip the teacher had on his shoulder.
Upon entering the office, the blonde broke free and ran forward to the nearest cot where an unconscious, bandaged Jack lay. Not caring who saw anything, he grabbed the man's closest hand and squeezed it tightly, blinking back several more tears.
"He doesn't have a concussion," a voice, probably the nurse's, spoke from behind him, "We checked his pupils, pulse, and reflexes. Someone obviously assaulted him, but he'll be alright, just in some pain for awhile."
The boy didn't respond save a slow nod, mouth open absently while he gazed at Jack's prone body. When asked about what happened (and why the man was even there in the first place), Oliver simply answered with a "Our cat died. He wanted to come pick me up." It was as good a lie as any. In response to the other dozen questions, he merely shrugged, answering truthfully that he didn't know how his guardian ended up in such a condition.
The sound of footsteps exiting alerted the boy that he was alone with Dodger and, lower lip trembling, let the tears fall from his eyes. Burying his face in Jack's chest, he squeezed his hand tighter, taking in shaky breaths.

The man drifted in and out of consciousness, things around him spinning and going from black to white. He'd never felt this bad before, it was like he'd been hit by a semi-truck and then run over by one of those trucks that has a giant roller on it. What were those called? Steamrollers? Whatever, that's how he felt at this moment in time.
"Jack, wake up! What--you might have a concussion! You can't go be unconscious with one!"
Oliver.
The man struggled to get a good look at the boy, feeling his eyelids get heavier and heavier. He just wanted to hold him. To let him know he was going to be alright. Soon enough, Oliver was snatched away from him by some woman and he groaned, feeling some strangers picking him up and taking him into the school. After that, all he heard was Oliver's screams and his world went black.
The man groaned, feeling something heavy, warm and wet on his chest. Hopefully his brain or his heart hadn't fallen out somehow. He blinked and tried to get his bearings, wincing as he felt someone squeezing his hand and he groaned. The sharp pain in the back of his head appeared as he tilted his head to find Oliver crying on him. Wait, Oliver was crying. The man winced as he moved his free arm up and placed his fingers in the boy's hair. He took a deep breath and winced as he felt like someone was stabbing him in the chest. "Don' cry Olipop, Please don'... cry" he croaked, running his fingers through Oliver's hair and giving his hand a squeeze. He didn't want Oliver to cry over him. He didn't serve it, and it made him feel horrible.
"Don'... deserve.... your tears...."

Oliver let the thin sheet covering Dodger's body serve as his muffler, because he really didn't want any of the teachers rushing back in to the sound of him crying. He'd rather he look like an emotionless heap of mess than for others to see him breaking down. With that rumour going around, any student that might pass by and see him crying over the form of his caretaker would sweep through the school like a fire. At that moment though, he couldn't care less. He felt genuinely alone and lost for the first time in a year and didn't know what to do with himself.
Oli cried over the thought of him being sent back to an orphanage, over losing the one person who cared about whether or not he was happy, and he cried out of fear of being alone again, without anyone around to care about him. Dodger's over protective tendencies suddenly seemed like a godsend, and the possibility of him leaving forever was a nightmare.
That he didn't have a concussion, that he was going to be fine, that he wasn't going anywhere didn't occur to Oliver's frantic mind. He hadn't processed any good information, and it felt like his brain froze the instant Jack hit the ground. He couldn't function with the man in this state. He couldn't handle big, strong, confident Dodger with a hop in his step and a grin on his face being so..unavailable.
The boy was so absorbed in his thoughts however, that he jumped in fright when he felt a hand in his hair. Jerking his head up quickly, he gaped in shock at the sight of Jack's weak gaze. His head was all bandaged up, concealing most of his blonde locks, and his face looked so forlorn. Oliver only took a moment to consider his own appearance before the man spoke.
"Don' cry Olipop, Please don'... cry." This of course, caused a fresh wave of tears to spill from the boy's eyes. He raised his free hand instead of hiding his face, however, and wiped furiously at his cheeks. "Don'... deserve.... your tears....""Of course you deserve them," he whispered, voice shaking and cracking, "I thought..you were bleeding so much and you fell down and I didn't know what to do, and--" Oliver cut himself off as his lower lip trembled once more. He bit down quickly on it to stop another onslaught of tears and clenched his eyes shut. "What did you do?" [/blockquote]

"Of course you deserve them,"
Jack felt his heart breaking at the sound of Oliver's voice cracking, the man giving Oliver's hand a squeeze to try and calm him.
"I thought..you were bleeding so much and you fell down and I didn't know what to do, and--"
The man sighed, summoning as much strength as he could, and sitting up, pulling Oliver into his arms and hugging him close. He didn't care who saw, Oliver needed him and he was going to be there for him whether he was strong enough or not.
"What did you do?"
Jack sighed, pulling Oliver close and hugging him tight. He breathed deeply and sighed, nuzzling Oliver's neck and muttering incoherently. "Was going to the car... Trying to get here... Parent comes outta nowhere... Accuses me of doing shit with his son... Never even met his son... Turns out he was drunk... Head hurts..."
He hoped he was making sense. It made sense in his head when he was trying to form words, so hopefully Oliver understood what he was trying to explain and wouldn't get upset. "Don' hate me... Love you... So much...." he murmured, feeling his chest throb angrily because he was talking so much. The man winced violently as his head started to throb and he laid back down, squeezing Oliver's hand. The last thing he wanted was for Oliver to hate him. Sure, he goes nuts sometimes, but he only does it because he loves the boy.

Oliver should have resisted when he felt and saw Jack struggling to sit up, and he should have told him to lay back down because it must not be good for his head. But at that moment Oliver needed as much comfort as Dodger needed medical treatment. He felt drained and wanted to curl up in the man's arms and never have to deal with anything again. No rumours in high school, no dying mothers, and no long lost fathers. If he was with the man holding him for the rest of his life, safe with him, he wouldn't have to worry about anything else again.
The boy felt the hot breath of Jack exhaling followed by a gentle nuzzle. With a silent hitch of his voice, he returned the affectionate gesture, kissing the man's neck as softly as he could.
"Was going to the car... Trying to get here... Parent comes outta nowhere... Accuses me of doing shit with his son... Never even met his son... Turns out he was drunk... Head hurts..."
The sound of Oliver's guardian struggling to form words almost hurt more than the story itself. He clenched the man's hand tighter, his other hand grasping tightly to his shirt subconsciously. He felt anger, extreme worry, and sympathy for the injured man lying in this bed. While normally he'd yell and scold Dodger for getting into this sort of situation, the memory of watching the man fall to the ground unconscious stopped him. Was it the fear that memory held? He didn't know, but either way he just didn't want to think about it.
"Don' hate me... Love you... So much...."
Oliver clenched his eyes shut, fighting against another round of tears. Inhaling deeply, he withdrew his face from the other male's neck and opened his eyes. After letting go of his shirt, Oli's hand rose to softly cup Dodge's cheek.
"I couldn't hate you, not ever," he replied earnestly, leaning forward to brush his nose against the other's in an eskimo kiss. He smiled weakly, sniffing. "That shouldn't have happened, and I'm so sorry you went through that. I love you too," he whispered, brushing his lips against Jack's. "I could have waited to tell you about what's been happening, you didn't need to come during the middle of the day. I'm sorry, I made you worry too much again." Oliver let his forehead rest against the older man's shoulder, pulling himself closer.

Jack froze at the boy's kiss to his neck, leaning his head on Oliver's shoulder for support as his thumb stroked the hand that held his. He felt Oliver squeeze his hand harder at his story and he sighed, running his fingers through the boy's curls to calm him, nuzzling his neck once more.
The man groaned lightly when he finally laid himself back down, grumbling inwardly at the pain, but his focus was on Oliver. He was sure that the boy had been taken from him once he'd heard Oliver screaming for him when they were outside and he was being moved. Thankfully the teachers seemed to have a heart and apparently allowed Oliver to be by his side. Jack probably would have actually had a heart attack or an early stroke of some kind if Oliver hadn't been there when he woke up. Well, then again, he was the reason Jack woke up in the first place; Oliver and his tears.
Oliver soon removed his face from Dodger's neck and he felt cold air come to where the boy had been, making him shiver. When he noticed Oliver was about to cry again his hand shot up and his thumb stroked his cheek to dry whatever tears may or may not have fallen from the boy's blue eyes. He blinked when he felt a hand on his face and the hand moved from Oliver's cheek to his own, holding the boy's hand tight as he listened to him, starting to feel the dizziness fade.
"I couldn't hate you, not ever,"
Jack breathed out a sigh of relief, giving Oliver's hands a squeeze as he kept him close. Oliver didn't hate him. That was the best news he could ever get. He blinked as the boy leaned over and brushed their noses together, chuckling lightly at the gesture as he felt his smile widen.
"That shouldn't have happened, and I'm so sorry you went through that. I love you too,"
After Oliver pressed his lips to his he sighed, leaning up and giving him a quick peck before lying back down. "That was... not your fault.... Do you... understand?" he muttered, glad he was starting to form complete sentences and make sense again.
"I could have waited to tell you about what's been happening, you didn't need to come during the middle of the day. I'm sorry, I made you worry too much again."
Jack bristled when he heard Oliver blaming himself yet again for something that was totally out of his control. He stroked Oliver's hair as he placed his head on Jack's shoulder, but he nuzzled the boy's neck again before he continued. "Whether you told me during the day or not... That guy was going after me whether it was now or later... 'Cept later he prolly wouldn' have been drunk... Whatever... Not your fault... Got it?"

Oliver felt as the hand he held to Jack's cheek was enclosed in one of the man's own, squeezing it tightly. He smiled, a watery one, towards him, sniffing again. Despite his feelings on Dodger's condition, he felt infinitely more cheerful (even if it only showed marginally) that he was awake and forming words at all. Maybe the sentences were more fragmented than whole, but he was obviously coherent and cognizant enough to reply at all. That alone sent the boy's heart letting go of a lot weight. The fear of the man having a concussion and falling unconscious..it was still fresh in his mind, but right here, right now, he was awake and okay. No lasting brain damage (and when Oliver's feeling better, he'll definitely make a joke about the damage prior to this incident), no serious flesh injuries. It was okay.
"Whether you told me during the day or not... That guy was going after me whether it was now or later... 'Cept later he prolly wouldn' have been drunk... Whatever... Not your fault... Got it?"
At these words, the blonde wilted slightly. If the man hadn't been drunk, maybe he would have gotten better punches in and Dodger would be in a hospital bed now, instead of just the nurse's office. So, in a way, maybe there was a blessing to having the man come here so much earlier, if indeed the drunkard would have attacked either way. But the fact still remained, that he had made Dodger worry. Now he still did have two things to worry about. A head injury, plus wanting to attack high school students. Granted, now that he was feeling the repercussions for his actions (of losing his cool, that is), Oli had no doubt he wasn't going to attempt anything illegal. But there would still be those feelings, which would put added strain on his mind.
But a half-hearted, fleeting thought entered Oli's mind. Maybe, just maybe, Jack had forgotten why he came to the school in the first place? It wasn't likely, and a long shot to be sure. Either way, if the boy didn't mention it, maybe it wouldn't come up at all. It'd just get the man worked up and maybe then his heart rate would accelerate and this boy didn't want to be responsible for his caretaker having a heart attack. Seriously.
So, in order to appease Dodge (and hopefully get his mind off anything related to the second matter at hand), gave a nod of his head. "Okay. I'm sorry, I just felt really bad." Heaving a very real sigh, he sniffed and, drawing his hand back from his guardian's face, gave one more swipe across his eyes.
"How are you feeling?" he asked softly, his hand reaching hesitantly forward towards the bandaged back of his head, but drew it back quickly. A wound like that was definitely tender and sore. And given the constant wincing Jack seemed to be doing, it was bothering him without any contact. With a sidelong glance to the door, Oliver bit his lower lip. "Maybe I should go..? I'm sure the nurse will call a taxi or something for you."
Truthfully, he didn't want to leave Dodger. He wanted to stay with him and follow him back home like a stray again. He wanted to watch him and make sure he got better, but maybe distancing himself, just a little, will help him calm down. After all, the man's over protective attitude would only add more stress to his already over-loaded brain. He didn't need Oliver around to make it worse.

"Okay. I'm sorry, I just felt really bad."
Jack knew Oliver well enough that when he apologized that quickly, he was trying to get Jack to shut up and move on from the conversation they were having. Just this once he'd indulge the boy and let it go. He watched Oliver remove his hand from the man's face and rub his eyes again. To think that it was his fault the boy was so upset was killing him on the inside and when he remembered why he had been there in the first place everything fell into place. Oliver had run out to try and stop him, he ended up passing out and scaring the shit out of the poor kid.
"How are you feeling?"
"Like shit. Mostly because I scared you," he muttered, watching Oliver move to touch his bandaged head but remove his hand quickly. That unusually petrified look crossed Oliver's face and he bit his lip, looking at the door. Shit, what was going through that boy's head? Even though Jack had a pretty good idea of what it was, but he was still worried.
"Maybe I should go..? I'm sure the nurse will call a taxi or something for you."
"If you leave now I'm locking you out of the apartment. Period." he rumbled, his face contorting in anger as he reached over and pulled Oliver back over to him, turning his face to look him in the eye. Praise Jesus! He could form sentences and think clearly! And now, since he can do that, he wasn't going to let Oliver beat himself up about it anymore.
"Now you listen to me. No matter how much you tell me you're fine and you're not freaking out inwardly because I scared you today I know you're lying. I can see it in your eyes," his voice was stern, but he felt his heart breaking at the look on Oliver's face. He wasn't going to let the boy torture himself over the events of today, not like this. "You are the reason I breathe and the only person I want to wake up and see in the morning for the rest of my life. I worry because I love you and no matter what you say that's not going to change. I can tell you don't want to leave much as much as I don't want you to leave, so don't even suggest it. We're going to go home, curl up on the couch or something and watch those stupid shows that only come on at this time. How does that sound?"
Jack broke out his trademark grin at the end of his speech and leaned into the boy, placing his forehead against Oliver's with a deep breath. Well, that felt a LOT better than just trying to be his usual self and grunt to get his point across. Since he'd gotten closer to Oliver, he's been talking more-but only to the kid. Very rarely will he give a speech of that magnitude and length, but when he did he meant every word of it-especially when he was expressing good emotions. This was the first time he'd expressed just how important Oliver was to him, and he hoped that Oliver would understand the deep emotion behind every one of his words. He'd made his point and he was good with it. All he wanted to do now was to go home and keep Oliver in his arms without anyone being able to walk in at any time. "Keys are in my jacket pocket. You can drive, I'll make sure you go the right way, alright?"

"If you leave now I'm locking you out of the apartment. Period." At these words, Oliver's eyes widened in surprise, though could only emit a gasp as he was pulled, somewhat roughly, forward so that he collided with Jack's chest. His face was turned upwards so that he met the man's eyes, and he cowered slightly under the hard gaze. "Now you listen to me. No matter how much you tell me you're fine and you're not freaking out inwardly because I scared you today I know you're lying. I can see it in your eyes."The blonde didn't know what to say, let alone do. He'd only ever seen the kind of passionate anger in Dodger's face directed at others, never himself. He felt like he'd really screwed up, and odds are he would have started crying again (because everyone knew when Dodge got like this, it was like the world was ending) if he hadn't listened to his words. Trying to focus on them, he let his face relax slowly, eyes softening in understanding. The man never spoke like this, not to him, not to anyone. He was short and sweet with his words, and most were lucky to get anything other than three or four syllables, and that was if he liked them. To get this..this speech at close proximity with a fierce determination in the man's icy blue eyes was startling. "You are the reason I breathe and the only person I want to wake up and see in the morning for the rest of my life. I worry because I love you and no matter what you say that's not going to change. I can tell you don't want to leave much as much as I don't want you to leave, so don't even suggest it." The teen couldn't help it when he saw his vision going blurry. The tears slid down his cheeks despite his attempts to hold them in. Burying his face in the man's shoulder, he cried out of the memory of fear, the man's injury, and the intense impact those words had on him. He'd never heard any declaration of love like that directed at him. He'd never heard anyone speak to him with that much passion and affection in their voice, and to think it came from the man who everyone always saw as someone who'd never settle down. The odds that little, pitiful, vulnerable Oliver was responsible for these immense feelings of love from The Artful Dodger were incredible " We're going to go home, curl up on the couch or something and watch those stupid shows that only come on at this time. How does that sound?" Pulling back, the blonde laughed weakly, wiping furiously at his eyes and nose. God, he was crying so much today. The last time he'd done it this much was years ago when he was taken away. He had always tried not to let most things get him so emotionally invested that he'd break down, but with one incident involved this man, Oliver was helpless to contain his tears. "Keys are in my jacket pocket. You can drive, I'll make sure you go the right way, alright?" "Yeah, that-that sounds good," he whispered, voice catching as he inhaled shakily. Wiping his sleeve across his eyes once more, the boy smiled. "That..that meant so much. Thank you. I love you." [/blockquote]

When Oliver buried his face into Jack's shoulder, he wrapped his arms around the boy and stroked his curls. He felt the boy start to cry again and he held Oliver closer, burying his face in the boy's hair. "Don' cry kiddo." he murmured, kissing the boy's temple as he held him close. He didn't want Oliver to cry anymore, even if it was a good thing.
The man smiled, watching Oliver laugh weakly. He chuckled as he wiped Oliver's eyes and pulled him into a hug. He knew Oliver was one who got emotionally involved with things very rarely, but when he was involved he was definitely more emotional than usual. Jack kissed the boy's forehead tenderly and stroked his cheek to try and get Oliver's tears to disappear. He hated to see Oliver cry, it broke his heart.
