Slamming the phone back down on her dresser she pulled her pillow up to her face and screamed. Tears were running down her cheeks which were a bright shade of red. Kiara threw her pillow back onto her bed in fury and ran out into the hallway. One of the maids dared to come near her and she just yelled to leave her alone. Rushing back into her room she ran straight back to the dresser and picked up the phone. “Maybe this’ll get the message through to him,” she yelled as she dialled one of the few numbers she actually knew. Holding the phone to her ear she clenched her teeth hard and waited for the familiar voice on the other line. “Malachi, good. I hope you’ve got time because I need to work up my dad’s phone bill.” She grinned, moving to sit back on her bed. Hopefully now her father would actually understand exactly how she felt about his obsession with work. That, and she needed to talk to Malachi anyway.

Malachi rubbed his eyes gently, wiping away the tears growing in them from staring at the computer screen for too long. This was quite unusual for him, sitting on the computer that is. Normally, he was outside taking a nice jog or throwing the ole pigskin around with some buds. He sighed gently, hating that he had to still write an essay on holiday break. His fingertips drummed against the wooden computer desk he had, frustration clear in his eyes until the sounds of 'Little Lion Man' began ringing in his pocket. Quickly, Malachi fumbled with his pockets until he pulled out the phone, answering it easily. "Hello?..." It was dumb of him but he hadn't glanced at the phone to see who had been calling. As the voice responded, he spun slightly in his chair, it was just Kiara. He rose an eyebrow. "Work up your dad's phone bill? What happened? Got into another fight with him over something stupid?" He spun around again in his chair, his gaze drifting towards the posters on his wall, awaiting her reply.

Shaking her head, Kiara grinned as her friend responded. He always assumed it was something stupid yet if he had ever paid any attention to her at all he would know that all of her arguments with her father were perfectly reasonable. She tugged on her necklace in annoyance and brought her knees up to her chest. “It was not stupid,” she retorted, her tone a little harsher than it usually was. “I topped my class with my short story for the finals and we were supposed to go out for dinner tonight to celebrate.” Kiara paused, trying not to let herself break down. She did not want Mal to ever see or hear her crying. She always assumed he thought it was a sign of weakness and she did not want him to think any less of her. So once she was ready she continued her story. “But he called about ten minutes ago saying that he was stuck at work, which is no surprise. I mean, he always cancels on me so I had no idea why I thought this was any different.” She looked down and sighed, thinking back to all the times Benjamin had cancelled on her but there were far too many to count. “So now I’m taking my revenge. Hopefully now he’ll realise just how annoying he’s being.”

He picked lazily at some thread that was dangling off of his shirt, ignoring the harsh tone in her voice. There was no point in him acknowledging how mad she sounded because that would just cause Kiara to get even more frustrated. In order to keep their conversation somewhat light and friendly, Malachi shut his mouth, listening more intently on what his best friend was saying. Her first words really didn't settle well. Mal was all about family and spending time together and the fact that Kiara's dad couldn't even make time to celebrate something wonderful, killed him and he could tell by the soft tremors in her voice, it killed Kiara too. He shrugged, fully aware she couldn't see him. "It's your dad...you're expecting him to be a dad and celebrate with you....so by running up his phone bill, it'll click with him? Ever think of just talking to him about it? Maybe he's afraid of having a relationship with you." Again, Malachi shrugged more to himself than anything as he reclined slowly in his computer chair. "Just your luck, we're celebrating...after you think you've run up his phone bill. We'll go get ice cream or something."

Pulling one of the large fluffy pillows into her lap she smiled at the sound of Malachi’s comforting voice. Why he was always so nice to her, she would never know. He was just that kind of older brother type friend she loved to have. There was one other man in her life that was like that, Leo, but she would never dare mention him around Mal. The feud those two had over Nala often confused her. Although it was mostly Mal being in the wrong seeing as, from what she had gathered, Leo did not even want to marry Nala. So basically their love triangle was just completely messed up. “Huh,” she mused slowly, falling back on her bed and looking up at the ceiling. “My dad doesn’t have time to talk Mal. He’s always busy or something and the only thing he had time for is cancelling our plans. You know, I cannot remember a birthday where he was actually around when I cut the cake. It was always me, Jill, Ruth, Tigg and occasionally Leo.” Kiara paused. Crap. She so should not have brought him up. Still, she continued, hoping Malachi would not say anything. “Awwww, thanks Mal. You’re such a great friend, really.”

He spun slowly in his computer chair, his intense gaze focusing on the old picture of him and Nala. He missed her and wished they were still together. A soft sigh left him, it taking a bit of effort for his mind to focus back on what was important at the moment; Kiara. A hand of his ran through his short hair. "You could...go into his office, hack his computer then put yourself on his schedule without him realizing it. Say you're some client and you think y'all should talk over lunch? Either that or I could just flatten his tires again...make him stay at home so you two have to talk." Flattening tires would be juvenile and subject to his maturity but if it meant that Kiara got to spend some of the necessary time with her father, Malachi didn't mind being childish. He lifted his hand up to his mouth, his teeth grasping ahold of his thumb nail. It was the only thing keeping him quiet about that idiot, Leo. His chiseled jaw clenched in slight anger before he let out a frustrated sigh. Acting as if he hadn't heard the ridiculous name, he shrugged at her last words. "It's nothing." For the third time a sigh left his lips, his forehead now against the cool desk that held his computer. "I can't tell if you accidentally said his name or just wanted to hear me rant and rave about the guy again." His voice sounded a bit defeated and in a way he was but he'd never admit that to anyone especially Kiara.
