Thoughts buzzed around the young man’s head. He hated it when his mind was this busy. These days, Leo much preferred his mind completely focused on something fun or trivial, so there was no space for anything else. When his mind was allowed, it tended to fill with potentially harmful thoughts. Thoughts of what happened that night- to his father. Guilt over what had happened. Guilt over not taking any action to set it right. And if those thoughts weren’t enough to drive the young man completely batty, there were the thoughts about his best friend. He knew what was supposed to happen between them- they were supposed to be wed. However Leo wasn’t sure he could bring himself to do it. She was his best friend, it was just... weird. He wasn’t sure he’d be able to get over the feeling that he’d be kissing his sister.
There was so much pressure though. Pressure from all sides. His mother had, in no uncertain terms, informed him that being apart of the family meant he had certain responsibilities and that if he didn’t fulfil those responsibilities he could consider himself out of the family. Any inheritance that was his would be re-assigned to someone who was willing to do what had to be done. When did marriage become less about love and more about obligation anyway? He supposed for some people, marriage had never been about love. Leo wished he could be one of the people who could make the choice of who to be with out of love, but it really didn’t seem like he was ever going to be allowed that luxury. His lot in life had been cast long before he had even been born, it seemed. And if he wanted the perks of who he was, he had to do as he was told. Well maybe he didn’t want the perks anymore?
Leo needed to clear his mind. He needed to get out of the house- it was pressing down on him. He couldn’t breathe. The young man could almost feel his skin bubbling. The need to do something completely reckless was surging through Leo. He needed to get out- now. Sitting up in bed, the young man threw off the covers. It was two am, what was he supposed to do at this time in the morning? Frowning, the young man pulled on a tee-shirt and some track pants. He really didn’t care at this point, he just needed to get out. Once he had shoes on his feet and had keys in his pocket, Leo silently let himself out of the house. The last thing he needed was to wake his mother up, and have her on his case. He was already stressed enough.
Sometimes Leo hated that his family home was so far out of town. It was such a trek to make it back after a drunken night of fun. However, tonight as he stepped out into the cold night air, he was glad for the darkened silence of his street. All he could hear was the roar of the ocean. The ocean! He knew what he needed to do know. Double-backing, Leo let himself into the backyard of his house via the side fence. He had gone out the front door thinking he’d go try and find something with loud music and booze, but no, that wasn’t what he needed.
Leo made his way across the large deck and yard, avoiding the pool to the left. He then let himself out the back gate. A few metres of grass and he hit the sand dunes. Following the trail between two dunes, Leo came out onto an empty stretch of beach. Shivering, he kicked his shoes off. Picking them up and heading towards the surf. Once he was close enough, Leo dropped his shoes and discarded the rest of his clothes. Stealing himself, Leo ran. Right into the surf. Ice water pricked his skin, but it did exactly what he was hoping. His brain couldn’t concentrate on anything but the intense cold. Ducking under a wave, he let his entire body become submerged. “Fuck!” He let out in a yell as he came back up, wiping hair from his face. Fuck was right... It was cold.
