"The bear of love? Who wants to trade?" - Kenai
NAME: Kennedy Nolan Browning. NICKNAMES: Kenny, a lot of the time, AGE: Twenty-four. BIRTHDAY: August 16th. ORIENTATION: Heterosexual. NATIONALITY: American. OCCUPATION: Docent at the Cave of Wonders. PLAYED BY: Jim Sturgess. Stop judging me. He'd make an awesome bear. And just because a grandparent was Native American doesn't mean he looks super tan with dark hair and all that jazz. DISNEY: Kenai - Brother Bear. USER GROUP: Reluctant hero, I'd imagine.
PERSONALITY !
PROTECTIVE! Though he may not always act like it, Kenny is always working to protect those around him and keep everything good. He cares deeply for those he is close to, and he is begrudgingly a bit suffocating. Though he means well, often times it just seems like he is just being overbearing and a cynical dictator. Kennedy just want to keep everyone safe and under control, honestly. He will often step in to a situation he knows nothing about, just because he knows it's bad. He has a habit of taking on people as "personal cases," especially if he feels they need help. He can be a bit paternal, and he's always watching over those who he cares about. He can become extremely possessive and defensive if somebody tries getting him to loosen up. After all, someone in his family has to step up and be an adult. He can at times come across as controlling and paranoid, but he only does it to prevent anything from happening to those around him. If someone acts against him, he can become snappy and shut down the person. He is there for people, even if he has a backwards way of demonstrating it, and would gladly defend someone until the end of time. IMPULSIVE! You know those people who act first and then realize they probably didn't do the smartest thing? Yeah, Kennedy is certainly one of those people. He tends to think little of repercussions or consequences, instead launching into action. This isn't always bad, of course. Kenny tends to help those who are in need without a second thought. He is always there for his friends or people he cares about. He will jump to your side in an argument, or show up at your house if you're upset. However, it can be a bit of a problem. He can come across as extremely narrow-minded when angry, and will easily jump to conclusions or raise a fuss. He doesn't always have a temper or anything, but when provoked, he will lash out in ways that are probably not the best. He is still young, and is still learning how everything in life works. He isn't exactly greedy, but he will sometimes do things just because he wants to or feels like it. He makes decisions quickly, even if he has no idea what he's doing. Often times, he doesn't take into consideration the situation at hand or the effects it could have. Some would call him reckless, others would call him foolish, it all really depends. CARING! It would be inaccurate to say that Kennedy is a worry wart. He doesn't just sit around, freaking out. Though he can become worrisome at times, that is often not his focus. It would be a lie, however, to say that he isn't caring. He doesn't like to see people hurt, and he works very hard to ensure that people are happy. He will gladly interject himself into someone's life if he felt that he could help them in some way or form, even if they are reluctant for his help. At times, Kennedy can become very concerned with the wellbeing of other people. He hates to see people upset, and he wants people around him to succeed. He can be extremely helpful, and he will go out of his way to make someone feel better, even if it isn't required of him. However, something Kennedy is not is clingy. He may care and try to help, but he doesn't often act like it. He would go and help someone fix something in their house, but make cynical comments the entire time. He can give mixed signals in terms of how much people really do matter to him, and it's very difficult to get him to break down and admit it. His caring side is very obvious in his actions, but not at all in his attitude and speech patterns. HYPOCRITICAL! You know that whole protective trait of his? Well, while he may be protective, Kennedy is well aware of the fact that he doesn't lead by example. He's the type of guy to inform you that you don't want to do something, but he will turn around and do it. He acts as if he is exempt from this concept, or that people won't really notice that things don't line up. He really does care about other people more than he cares about himself, but he doesn't quite understand that people might try to look up to him. He has always warned people to take his advice, not to follow his actions. He may disapprove of a certain behavior, but end up doing so. He may insist that smoking it back and unhealthy, but then he will be caught later that day with a cigarette and lighter in his hands. He also will use people as examples of how not to live your life, but he will do the same thing. It can be difficult to take his advice seriously when one realizes that he very seldom follows it. He isn't extremely open about this side of him, instead trying to steer focus away from his own flaws in an attempt to help others. He knows he isn't a good role model, though he tries to hide the negative features. SARCASTIC! Kennedy is bit of a piece of work. The bear of love may symbolize him, and he may really care about those he is close to, but he often tries to cover it up with this obnoxious attitude. He often goes through life acting as if everything is just a waste of time. He is extremely cynical, and it isn't hard to have him rolling his eyes at you. Often times, an icy remark will slip from his face with a smirk. He almost has a haughty demeanor, and he doesn't hesitate to chuckle at other people or his own jokes. He has some sort of comeback for virtually everything, but it isn't exactly a stiff sense of sarcasm. He says everything with this sort of honey-coated acid. His comments aren't serious, but that doesn't mean they can't be harsh. Of course, Kennedy would never say anything with the real intention of hurting someone; he just needs some way to retain his pride. He isn't the most wishy-washy of guys, certainly not when he's poking fun at all of your flaws. If he ever goes too far, Kennedy is able to stop with the jabs. He knows when people are hurt versus just being annoyed or amused.
QUIRKS: He tends to go from one end of the emotional spectrum to another in seconds, he tends to reference spirits, always tapping his fingers, prone to fiddling with his clothing, rarely seen without a smirk or smile.
LIKES: The outdoors, cold, snow, history, learning about "his" culture, rock climbing, quiet, his motorcycle, hockey, sushi, his job, women, keeping everyone safe, pleasant days, his oldest brother, cigarettes, appearing manly, the smell of a wood-burning fire. DISLIKES: Being told what to do, the middle brother (at times), people who sware by veganism, clingy people, overly fried foods, being ignored, hot temperatures, rain, celery, smoothies, drunk people, stress, change, pain, buzzcuts, chatspeak, death, people who misunderstand him.
HISTORY !
Juneau, Alaska is not exactly known for being exciting.
In fact, most people probably don't associate Alaska with adventure.
Of course, for a young boy, living in Juneau was flawlessly exciting. He could spend hectic winter days out in the snow with his two older brothers, or he could spend a summer wandering barefoot in the yard. He got along with the other kids around, and didn't really think much of it. His mother was a single woman who played the violin. He remembers that his house was only a ten minute walk to the only performing theater in the state, and his mother would often take the boys with her on days that she couldn't find a sitter. He used to love to watch his mother play. She could sing, also, but she never sang in front of crowds. She would sing him and his brothers lullabies in a language other than English. Though he never understood the words, he always felt comforted by them. He spent most of his early years hanging on to his mother's skirt, taunted by his older brothers. The middle brother was especially insufferable, but Kennedy was able to suck it up. He was young and naïve. He thought that was how he was supposed to act, and he didn't want to be a tattle tale whenever the older boy would say anything mean. He made friends and had adventures and played pretend. He got muddy and scratched and bruised. Things were great.
Then the Browning family moved.
Kennedy initially hated the move. He didn't see why Rosemary wanted to move their home. She loved her job and he loved to sit in that theater and watch her practice. It made Kennedy even less excited to know that they were moving to a Reservation. Apparently, his grandfather was a member of the tribe. His mother had decided that she wanted to raise her family in the tribe life, despite the fact that she herself had no Native American blood. They moved north. His oldest brother worked to make his younger brothers adjust to the change. Kennedy was only eight at the time, and would have much rather been back in Juneau with his house and yard and video games. He allowed himself to be moved, though he pitched a fit. Still, he sucked it up. Every family moved, he was told. It was normal. He had a more difficult time opening up to people in this new place. He had yet to learn enough about history to know what he was being forced into. He would listen to the people who would tell him what to do, though always pouting. He missed Juneau almost instantly, no matter how much his oldest brother tried to help him get adjusted to the new location.
The accident was the thing to draw him into the tribe, at last. Kenny was twelve. His mother had been out, when she was hit by somebody who had drive into town to purchase wares from one of the artisans. The man had fallen asleep at the wheel. His mother was lifted to the nearest hospital, and the children were packed into a car and driven after them. By the time Kennedy and his brothers arrived, she was already in surgery. Prospects were looking grim. He wasn't just some little kid anymore; he didn't have to ask to know. The nurses kept shooting him nervous glances. His oldest brother said nothing, instead keeping his arms around his brothers in an attempt to keep people calm. The man who had driven them down remained, and appeared just as torn when the news was finally delivered. Their mother didn't make it. When they returned, the boys were taken in by a close friend of his mother's. The support of the tribe really hit him, despite the disconnect he had originally felt.
Kennedy actually became involved and began to pay attention to others. He didn't exactly buy into the concepts behind some beliefs – such as spirits and nature. Still, it was refreshing to see the amount of respect that nature received from the people. He took on a few of the traditions, versus awkwardly watching. His oldest brother attempted to steer him further into the direction of the tribe, and he was starting to get along with the middle brother. Kenny looked up to the elders; he liked to watch people at their crafts. He may have lost his mother, but he was beginning to find a home. He always looked forward to one particular celebration, a coming of age celebration. Though he knew that very few people actually believed that the shaman held any real power, everybody was given a totem by the old woman. At first, he was hesitant to see if they would even be participating in the festivities. They hadn't been born in the tribe, and though her mother had gotten along with people, it was their father's side that held the native blood. However, his older brothers were both given animal totems, and his faith was restored. He couldn't wait to get his.
Imagine his disappointment when he received a symbol of love.
Of course, that didn't stop Kennedy from trying to be a big, macho man. He wanted to impress everyone else even more. The week after receiving it, trouble began. He had traveled with his brothers into the closest metropolitan area for the weekend, a sort of vacation to help celebrate the new stage of his life. They were driving down an icy road when a person driving the opposite direction in the other lane lost control of their car. Once more, Kenny found him and his brothers in the hospital. This time, he had actually sustained injury. Luckily, Kennedy was able to get by with only a few minor injuries and a broken bone. The middle brother also got managed to do the same. The oldest brother, however, did not make it. It would later come up in court that the man who had hit them had been under the influence of alcohol. Kennedy instantly left the tribe, finding it too difficult to cope after the loss of both his mother and oldest brother. His other brother remained up north as Kenny traveled to a big city somewhere else in the United States, far from Alaska and Juneau and his tribe.
Months later, he found himself in a peculiar situation. He was the witness to yet another accident, this time in which a woman lost her life. She left behind a child. Kennedy gave the kid a place to stay for the next several days, while police tracked down someone to take care of him. At the age of twenty, just a college student living in an apartment, Kenny had no real idea how to approach things. Still, he wanted to help the boy. He felt he could relate to the kid, given everything that had happened with his family. When police informed him that an immediate relative was unavailable and children services were still searching, he volunteered himself to take the kid on as a foster. The man they sent from children services was skeptical, but allowed Kennedy to do so, on the condition that he frequently meet with someone from their offices and that he give the child up if a relative were ever found. Kenny agreed. A couple of years later, he had graduated, and moved to a job in Fantasia. The kid came with him, and it's likely at this point that no family will ever show up to take him back.
SAMPLE !
He had to be the single most aggravatingly confusing person in her life. She was positive of that fact. Being around a hungry bear probably would have been less stressful for her to put up with. Her roommate was easy to get along with, and even if they disagreed on some things, one of them could just easily slip out and go patrol or something like that. They could blow off steam without killing each other. That wasn't the case with Quentin. He had the uncanny ability to make her laugh one moment, and then be scowling the next. She could be restraining the urge to punch him and then turn around to be smirking, with some sarcastic response waiting in the wings. Of course, Lenore had to admit that it was mostly her fault. She could have just kept walking, ignored the crowd and not let her curiosity get the best of her. She could have not even been going this direction, instead calling her roommate to come and pick her up because of the snow. No matter who was to blame – her in this case – it still didn't make her any less confused.
Her eyes widened after a moment. Oh no, was he seriously going to be sick? She remained still. What was she supposed to do? How was she supposed to recover from this? She didn't even know what was going on, yet alone be able to really be of any use. Lenore frowned slightly, running one of her sleeves over her face. She couldn't really be supportive of she was bawling her eyes out. She sniffed slightly as her arm fell back to her side. "It's okay, Lenny." He wasn't very convincing. Her head tilted to one side. Would he just make up his mind already? "I don't want to chase you away. I'm just not sure what to do right now." He was still upset, at least that was a recurring theme for her to latch on to. First, he was freaking out, then he practically tackled her, then he walked away, and now this. She peered down at her shoes for a while. Working with civilians was so much easier. They never had any personal ties, and it was much easier to tell someone they were alright when they didn't know that she was just saying that as part of the job.
"I want to be alone, but I want to be with a person. What I saw was just… too strange." She frowned slightly. "Quentin, are you please going to tell me what the hell you're talking about?" Her tone wasn't laced with sarcasm, and she fought to keep the annoyance out of her voice. Now wasn't exactly the time to get snippy, even if he was probably expecting some sort of icy insult. She almost sounded desperate, like she was pleading to figure out what was going on. Either way, she still sounded like a child. She probably looked like one, too, she imagined. The wrinkle between her eyebrows appeared as she fell silent once more, the confusion obvious on her face. Maybe she should have just remained quiet. It seemed that the more she spoke, the less she understood what was happening. He had seen something? Something weird? In a city like this, she didn't think it was difficult for that to occur. Maybe it had been something even more strange than normal? Lenore had no idea what that was. She had some unusual encounters in the couple of years she had lived in the city.
He was hugging her again. That was, what? Three times? Lenore couldn't wipe the scowl from her face. "What's gotten into you? Cut it out. You're freaking me out." She kept her tone quiet, looking uncomfortable for a brief moment. She paused, pursing her lips. He must have seen something huge if he was acting like this. "I'm sorry. That was mean." Lenore was still confused, but she was determined to help. "I won't walk away. I don't want to. I love being around you, even if you are annoying. I know you care – thank you, Lenny." She had really said it aloud, hadn't she? She wasn't just imagining it. She was too fixated on that to even say anything about the nickname. Her cheeks blazed for a moment. It had gotten him to stop walking away, as much as she didn't want to admit it. It was true, despite her aversion to saying it. "B-but, I… didn't really… want to say that. Out loud." She was like a kid who had gotten caught with their hand in the cookie jar. Lenore winced slightly. She was trying to defend herself. He was like a brother, she wasn't supposed to run around acting like she wanted to help. Her lips turned down in another frown. She fell silent for a moment. "You're warm."
