"You're all right, kid, for a cat. We'll keep a spot open in the gang for ya. Vice president, uptown chapter" - Dodger
NAME: Oliver John Charles NICKNAMES: Oliver, "Kid" AGE: 17 BIRTHDAY: 21st August 1992 ORIENTATION: Confused (though leaning towards homosexual) NATIONALITY: American OCCUPATION: Student/Parcel Boy, does some odd jobs here and there and helps out Dodger PLAYED BY: Dylan Forsberg DISNEY: Oliver -- Oliver and Company USER GROUP: Reluctant Hero?
PERSONALITY ! OPTIMISTIC & TRUSTING! Though the world has not been particularly kind to Oliver, he's still very much a 'glass is half full' kind of kid. There's no real explanation for it, he wasn't 'brought up that way' and his mother didn't tell him about any clouds or their silver linings (not that he ever knew his mother), he was just optimistic... no qualms about it. Maybe it's because he's seen people who have had it much worse than himself, and that even during unlucky times Oliver knew there were others out their who were even unluckier. "Things always work out in the end", which is the only motto he thinks is worth clinging to. Oliver has an optimistic outlook on people to match his optimistic outlook on life--meaning he's a pretty trusting kid, especially if you're nice to him. Of course his trusting nature has placed him a few vulnerable positions in the past, but still he can't help but try and see the best in people. 'Innocent' may be another good word to describe him, although he would hate being called it to his face.
SHY & QUIET! Oliver tries his best to stay away from confrontation and so he tends to keep most of his opinions to himself. Even though he trusts people easily he has few friends he deems close, and this is mainly because of his shyness. He only ever truly opens up to close friends, and even then it may take a while for his real opinions to properly surface. Oliver has difficulty expressing himself and putting his thoughts into words. He is very much a thinker, not a talker, and he can spend ages daydreaming and coming up with elaborate internal monologues, even if he would never say them out loud. He hates being the centre of attention in most every scenario, which is probably why he often surrounds himself with people who are more confident than him in order to divert attention away from him.
SYMPATHETIC & KIND! During his time at the orphanage Oliver was known as a goody-two-shoes (though often harsher turns of phrases were used), which isn't too far from the truth. He always tries to be on the good side of people (which ties in with his dislike of confrontation), and he always aims to see things from other people's point of view. He can be a little bit of a pushover in that sense, always trying his best to be helpful and often disregarding his own needs because of it. He's also a sucker for sob stories. Tell him a tale about hardships and neglect and he'll be there to ease any emotional wounds. Although he's uncomfortable talking about himself or his own feelings, he's happy to listen to other people talk about theirs.
QUIRKS: When Oliver gets embarrassed he blushes. Not just any old blush either, like a delightful rouge atop the cheekbones, but a full wash of beetroot red across his face. He also blushes when he's angry or had a bit too much to drink (he's a lightweight), but considering Oliver is rarely ever angry and mostly stays away from alcohol it's mostly just a sign of embarrassment (and Oliver gets embarrassed pretty easily).
LIKES: animals (especially kittens), hot chocolate and chocolate milkshake (just chocolate in general), phinneas dodge, reading any books he can find, singing to himself (never to anyone else), the few close friends he has, learning new things, summer and spring, napping, children.
DISLIKES: violence, alcohol, how easily he blushes, confrontation, being put on the spot, shouting, cold winters, rain, mean people, liars, unfairness.
HISTORY ! Oliver never knew his parents. He never knew what they looked like or where they were from or what they did for a living, all he knew was that when he was baby (barely a few days old) he was found in a box on the doorstep of the Fantasia City Orphanage--a piece of paper with the smudged words "Oliver/John/Charles" written upon it in the front pocket of his dirty baby suit. Instead of giving him just one of the names written on the paper, the people at the orphanage instead decided to give him all of the names. On the 21st of August 1992 Oliver was officially registered as "Oliver John Charles, parents unknown".
Growing up at the orphanage Oliver learned to keep his head low and blend in with the other children there. He learned to do as he was told without any qualms, and this he did with both the orphanage staff and with the more confident and often troublesome older children. Yes he was picked on for his slight build and curly hair, but Oliver quickly got used to it. After all he was never the worst bullied child, and for that he was glad. Although Oliver made a few momentary friends at the orphanage his relationships were always short-lived. Handsome couples would often come to visit the orphanage and adopt the cuter, prettier children: the ones with the dimples and the golden locks. Oliver grew up as a somewhat funny-looking child and his shyness meant he was never comfortable talking to the adults that came to visit. Thus he was never chosen, despite how the orphanage staff sang him praises ("He's a grower. A polite boy. It takes a while to get to know him").
Eventually, at around the age of thirteen, Oliver was assigned to a foster home. His new foster home was in the outskirts of Fantasia City, and Oliver had high hopes for his new life in what he imagined would be his very first family. Eileen was his foster mother, a kind yet meek women who spent her time as a house wife looking after three other children: two of which were her own and another a fostered child (a fourteen year old girl called Rachel). His foster father, a man called Dean and the husband of Eileen, was away working out of state for the first month of Oliver's arrival. Initially everything was going smoothly. Oliver helped Eileen around the house with various chores and the other children were reasonably friendly towards him. However, things began to change when Dean returned home from his travels. Oliver could sense that was something wrong immediately, the other children stayed in their rooms (although Eileen's sixteen year old eldest son, Liam, spent most of his time out of the house) and Eileen barely spoke. The house feel silent as soon as Dean made his presence known. There seemed to be an atmosphere of fear enveloping the place.
One night, a week after Dean's return, Oliver was reading a bedtime story to Hannah, Dean and Eileen's seven year old daughter and youngest child (who had quickly taken a shine to Oliver), when a loud noise was heard in the kitchen. The clattering of pans and a yell from Eileen quickly brought Oliver to his feet, with Hannah and Rachel following suit. It was then when Oliver saw Dean hit Eileen hard across the face, causing her to fall with a crash onto the kitchen floor. Oliver sprinted to the living room in hopes to reach the phone. If there was one thing Oliver was good at, it was running. Before Dean knew what was happening, Oliver had reached the phone and began dialing, but he never finished. "If you call anyone," Dean had warned, "I will hit her even harder. Who knows what will happen?" The threat stopped Oliver in his tracks and with lump in his throat he handed the phone back to Dean.
In less week's time after the event Oliver was kicked out of the house and sent back to the orphanage. Dean had complained about Oliver, saying that he was unruly and almost broke apart their family. To Oliver's surprise and great sadness, Eileen had agreed with her husband. He never saw them again, nor did he see the other children. His life carried on in the same way: moving from foster home to foster home and in and out of the orphanage. When he reached sixteen he finally had enough, running away from the orphanage with a little bit of cash he had saved up over the years. He lied that he was eighteen (despite that fact that he had a baby face) to work cleaning dishes in a run-down diner, the owner of the diner, a nice man by the name of Leroy, being kind enough to let him sleep in in basement. It soon became clear, however, that Leroy wanted more from Oliver than a dishwasher and a squatter, and one night Leroy attempted to turn their relationship... sexual. But Leroy was still a good man and after seeing the shocked look upon Oliver's face he quickly stopped his advances, apologising profusely. Oliver left both the job and Leroy soon after and spent a few days roaming homeless through the streets of Fantasia.
On his fifth day as a vagrant, Oliver ran into Phinneas Dodge, a confident and charming young man who Oliver helped out of a tough situation (and vice versa). Phin reluctantly let Oliver stay over at his for the night, and the night after, and the night after that. Soon they were roomies, much to Phin's dismay and Oliver's delight.
Now that he has some semblance of a stable home life (if you could call it such), Oliver has returned to school, albeit a grade behind, in hopes to one day make something of himself.
