PERSONALITY !
SHORT-TEMPERED! James has an almost non-existent fuse when it comes to keeping control of his temper. He is easily agitated and prone to flights of melodramatic fury, especially when things don't go his way. His wealthy and spoiled upbringing is the likely reason for this. Having been used to getting most everything he wanted as a child, it was only natural for him to expect the same as an adult. Recently he has been participating in anger management classes (as advised by his lawyer following several complaints from James' employees), and has improved a little by learning to express his emotions through other means, such as music (James is an avid pianist). Nevertheless, there are still many things that causes angry sparks to fly, such as people questioning his masculinity or insinuating any cowardice on his part. James hates to be called a wimp, whether in regards to his physical capabilities or his approach to business.
OBSESSIVE! Obsession is not necessarily a bad trait to have when it comes to the world of business. But of course that obsession must be aimed at the business itself for it to be of any use, and, unfortunately for James (and detrimentally for his company), his is not. Instead he obsesses over pretty much everything that isn't related to business: his vast model ship collection (which decorate every inch of his office), his appearance (although not so much now since the dissolution of his marriage), women, gambling, his vintage rum cellar, his own increasing lack of self worth... et cetera. James can be very meticulous when doing things unrelated to business, which can sometimes be construed as perhaps an immense form of procrastination and a vessel to escape from the seeming drudgery of the real world (at least this is what his therapist believes). His attitude towards work somewhat mirrors that of a child: choosing to play with his toys rather than getting down to the important issues of homework and studying.
BITTER! Life has not turned out the way James had been expecting it to. In the mind of his younger self, which seems a world apart from his mind now, he had visions of success. He never imagined he'd end up as just the figurehead of what is supposedly, in name anyway, his own company, despite having very little say in its day-to-day running. Similarly with love: James had expected so much more from love as a teenager. He hadn't thought he'd be going through a divorce when in his mid-thirties, nor that he would still be childless (he has an increasing suspicion that he may be infertile) or have an intense, deep loathing for his ex-wife. Such turn of events, along with numerous other smaller disappointments, has sucked out any joy James may have had in his life, leaving him with only a dank cloud of depression and a deep-seated jealousy for those who still maintain their love for life.
SELF-CENTERED! James thinks a lot of his own capabilities and is quick to blame others, or 'mitigating' circumstances, for his own downfalls. Though there are a few things he is talented in (his craftsmanship for scale model ships being one example, his skills as a pianist being another), he considers these but the tip of the iceberg when it comes to his underlying treasure trove of abilities. On the surface he portrays himself as a shrewd businessman, even though he holds little sway in the management of 'his' company in reality. On a subconscious level, James is aware of his lack of control in his business and sometimes this awareness bubbles to the edges of his consciousness, resulting in often disastrous and self-detrimental depressive swings a few times a year. Those who know him, and have stock in his role as the company's 'face', try their best to ensure he remains self-aggrandising, as this side of him is often far easier to handle than his escaped-from-the-subconscious self-loathing. This treatment only feeds his egotistical nature, making each fall from grace higher and harder than before.
QUIRKS: James has a tick in his right eye that becomes more evident when he is stressed, angry or upset (or just emotional in general). Talk of his ex-wife is especially effective at provoking the tick.
LIKES: rum, his model ships, playing the piano, smoking, gambling, talking about himself, women (or at least womanising), feeling sorry for himself, complaining, feeling important. DISLIKES: his ex-wife, being mocked, happy couples, ambitious young people, his receding hairline, apologising, his increasing impotence, his tick, charity, the idea that he may be forgotten one day.
HISTORY !
Theodore Hooke and Edna Stuart were married one fine July afternoon. He was the founder of Hooke Industries and she was a well-bred young woman with specks of blue blood in her veins. Though they differed in age by almost a decade, the two got along marvelously... or at least that was the pretty picture that the newspapers painted for the two. In reality they were getting married out of necessity rather than love. Theodore, at the age of thirty-six, came to the realisation that he needed a heir to carry his name and take care of his company, whilst Edna, twenty-seven and already considered an 'old maid' by her overbearing mother, needed to wed a rich man in order to bring some money back into her financially dying family. So the two married and less than a year later James Theodore Hooke was born.
A nanny was hired almost immediately to take care of James as Edna preferred to do her mothering from afar (she was fond of Tenerife). Similarly, Theodore was far too busy working to bother with the tediousness of looking after a child (and he would never worry himself with such womanly duties anyway). Their one stipulation for the nanny was that she gave James everything he wanted and needed. As soon as he was old enough to go to school, James was sent packing to England where he was to attend boarding school until he turned eighteen. The staff at the school were told to do the same things as James' nanny was: give the boy everything he wanted and needed, no qualms about it. Thus he grew into an exceptionally spoiled and exceptionally unloved young man, but really... was their any other possibility?
Though James was a bright boy, and had always been, he was made to think that he was considerably brighter than his peers. He attended Cambridge to study business (with the help of his father's under-the-table donations) and spent the majority of his university life drinking fine champagne and drunkenly trashing restaurants. He left Cambridge with a third class degree under his belt and a general air of smug satisfaction. James knew, after all, that no matter what degree class he obtained he would still be given a job at Hooke Industries in a blink of an eye. He flew back to America and back to the city of his birth, Fantasia City, to take his place, his birth right in fact, by his father's side. As James had expected, he was instantly given an office by his father's, as well as a title and role that sounded extremely important. It soon came to his realisation, however, that he was just being paid to be present, and that all of his duties seemed to have almost negligible impact on the company. James became the face of Hooke Industries, taking part in social events and smiling any and all the cameras that pointed his way.
When James was twenty-eight, Theodore had a stroke that almost entirely paralysed the left side of his body. Now, unable to work, Theodore's job at Hooke Industries was instantly given to his son, suddenly landing James with far more responsibilities than he could handle. He had to quit his bachelor and party-going lifestyle and was made, by his mother, to find himself a wife. James settled with the first attractive woman his mother suggested for him and the two were married just after James turned twenty-nine. The marriage was a train wreck from the start. His new wife was an overly ambitious and career-climbing woman who wanting, as her wedding present, a substantial share in Hooke Industries. Not really thinking it through, James had given her the shares after her constant nagging for them. Furthermore, despite both of their best efforts, his wife never became pregnant.
After a while James began sleeping with other women on the side, his joke of a love life with his wife now being nothing but a front for his mother and the papers. His job too was being side-lined. Though he was still the named owner of the company, others had begun to take the responsibilities that he couldn't handle. Before he realised it he had been pushed almost entirely out of most of the decision-making for the company and excluded from many of the meetings. When he was thirty-four his wife found out about his affairs (she had hired a private detective to follow him) and immediately filed for divorce. Due to the fact that James was the one 'in the wrong' she took almost everything and used her shares in Hooke Industries to take even more. Now, at thirty-five, James has little left to his name, living in his city apartment whilst his wife shacks up alone in their spacious Duckburg mansion.
