“Life is uncharted territory. It reveals its story one moment at a time.” - Leo F. Buscaglia
NAME: Jane Meredith Devereaux. NICKNAMES: Janie. AGE: Twenty-six. BIRTHDAY: August seventh. ORIENTATION: Straight. NATIONALITY: American. OCCUPATION: Employee at Pride Rock Zoo. PLAYED BY: Minka Kelly. DISNEY: Jane Porter; Tarzan. USER GROUP: Heroine.
PERSONALITY !
ARTISTIC! From an early age, Jane showed off her artistic prowess. The girl is creative and talented, and has an extreme fondness for drawing animals. It's not uncommon to find her with her nose buried in a sketch pad, or to find her lurking in an art supply shop. An entire room in her apartment is devoted to her passion, filled with books on animals, half-finished paintings, full and empty sketchbooks, a desk buried under scrap paper and charcoal pencils, and various other such artistic tools. When in the "art zone" mentally, it's hard to distract her or get her to focus on anything other than her art. More than once, a person has tried to talk to her, only to be frustrated when they learn she wasn't listening.
ADVENTUROUS! Like her father, Jane loves some adventure. She's brave and daring, and often gets herself into situations other people would be too timid to. Some would also call her reckless, but for the most part Jane has enough common sense to think before she acts, especially when on the job and working with animals that could hurt her if she's not careful. She also traveled to Sumatra when she was just sixteen, to work in wild environments with her father, which is something not a lot of people could say. In the future, she plans to take her adventuring up a notch and do research for longer periods of time.
KIND-HEARTED! It can certainly be said that this woman has a kind soul. She's caring and selfless, choosing to help others before she helps herself. This is especially true with animals. But she's not a pushover; if Jane is upset or angry, she'll be sure to let you know. Although she's generally non-confrontational, she's not afraid to stick up for herself or others when she feels the need. Still, she'd rather have friends then enemies. She tends to live by the Golden Rule: treat others how you want to be treated. If you're nice to her, she'll be nice in return. If you're mean to her, she'll either ignore you or tell you off for being a jerk. Though she is a sweetheart, she can be a real pistol when she wants to be.
INTELLIGENT! Jane is definitely a real nerd when it comes to learning. She can spend hours reading or studying without problem if she's interested in the subject. She's a quick learner and thinker, and good at memorization and problem solving. The girl has a level head, and doesn't easily get stressed in situations that would have others really nervous. But there are some areas in life, like in the department of romance, in which Jane has absolutely no clue what she's doing. Textbooks and animals she gets; interactions with people not as much. This isn't to say she's totally socially inept, but sometimes animals just make more sense to her than humans.
INDEPENDENT! At an early age, Jane was an independent one. She never needed her father or aunt or uncle to do anything for her (or at least she rarely asked them to) and was very content with just being on her own or doing things by herself. She's completely comfortable with being alone, and often prefers it. Jane is also the type of person who is reluctant to accept help; she prefers to try things on her own a few times before she does that. There are some things she's smart enough to know she can't do alone, but on other things she still prefers to do it herself. She tends to have a "do it yourself if you want it done right" attitude, so often takes tasks on just to make sure they get completed correctly -- aka her way.
QUIRKS: Babbles nonstop about anything related to animals, spends hours drawing, a bit clumsy, talks back to people who are rude to her, afraid of heights.
LIKES: Drawing, her job, reading, Caesar salad, cucumbers, movies, laughing, the color red, crocodiles, elephants, humming birds, most other animals, traveling, studying, chatting, jogging, hiking, swimming.
DISLIKES: Animal abuse, her father constantly being away, people's obsessions with technology, heights, greasy food, running out of shampoo or conditioner while in the shower, being clumsy, know-it-alls, tics, mosquitoes, other parasites, cramps, rude people.
HISTORY !
It was a warm California day in August when Christina and Victor Devereaux gave birth to their second child, a little girl they named Jane Meredith. The baby was greeted by her two year old brother, who at first was not very happy at this little bag of bones that was stealing the attention from their parents. This unhappy feeling lasted until Jane could walk, and then suddenly she was alright because she could go places with little Andrew. The family lived in the countryside, in an old farmhouse that was surrounded by fields and trees. That is where the siblings spent most of their time, just climbing trees and running through the grass. Often the family would go on hikes together, with little Jane tucked away in a carrier on her father's back. They were a very happy family, until tragedy struck them. When Jane was three, her mother and little brother died in a car crash on their way back from a dentist appointment. Suddenly Victor and Jane were all alone.
It took a few years before Victor could function normally again. Jane was too young to really understand what had happened, and young enough that she could begin to move on faster than her father. But she definitely understood that her father, now the main person in her life, was always very, very sad. When Jane was six, Victor finally went back to work, as an ecology professor at a local college. A couple years later, Victor got the chance to do something he hadn't done since before he'd met Christina -- he went on a research expedition. This required him traveling to Africa, where he wanted to study apes. While he traveled, Jane stayed with his sister and her husband in Fantasia. Jane always enjoyed her time with Aunt Clarice and Uncle Trent, but she missed her father terribly and would often send him letter, along with various pictures she drew. From a young age, Jane showed her artistic talent, and animals were always her subject.
Like her father, Jane had a strong love of nature. While he was off studying apes, Jane was constantly bringing home strays and injured animals, much to the amusement and exasperation of her aunt and uncle. The first one they let her keep was an old three-legged cat named Nico, who died of old age two years later when Jane was eleven. After that followed a string of other creatures, most of which were sent to the animal shelter, but some of which were kept. Often she'd go sit outside and pick a bird or cat or insect to draw, and every inch of the refrigerator door was covered in her drawings. In high school she took art classes to really hone her skills, and she began trying to figure out what kind of career she wanted. Jane knew she wanted to work with animals as her father had, but did she really want to travel across continents for months at a time in order to do it? To test it out, she asked her father one summer, after junior year of high school, if she could go with him. He reluctantly agreed, and Jane traveled with him to Sumatra to study Orangutans.
She loved it, but wasn't sure if she was ready to do it on a regular basis. So instead, she decided to aim for a job at the local zoo, first. The summer after high school and throughout college, she worked as in intern at a veterinary clinic, gaining experience with animals. After college, she applied to Pride Rock Zoo and was thrilled when she actually got the job. Jane spent much of her time giving tours to children that came on field trips, or working with primates. Being the new girl with less experience, she wasn't allowed to handle some of the more dangerous animals, but as time progressed and she earned credibility, Jane was trusted with more difficult tasks. To this day, Jane continues working at the zoo, and spends quite a bit of her time during breaks just sitting and drawing the animals. Eventually she'd like to travel as her father did, but until then she is content with where she is. Sadly, much of her social life has been neglected; though she makes friends easily, Jane has little experience in the romance department, and often chooses work over social time. But she's learning to multitask.
